This review examines episode 4 of Black Clover season 2.
Black Clover Season 2 Episode 4 examines Nacht's past, Asta's salvation as demonic forms combined with the failed surrender of Lilith and Nahamah.
Black Clover season 2, episode 4 focuses on Nacht, and ends with a confrontation between Asta and the demon.
In Black Clover Season 2, Episode 4, titled DayDay of Atonement, Nacht shifts the anime from the overarching battle structure of earlier series to a Night-centric encounter. The episode reveals hidden guilt, anger and self-destructive motives behind one of the most mysterious members of the Black Bulls as Asta ends up rescuing Night and confronting an evil co-created by Lilith and Nahamah.
The series is much more personal and easier to get used to than the previous, more complicated installments. There's a lot of action but the main thrust comes from delving deeper into Nacht's history and continuing to raise the threat of evil demons in the underworld.
Nacht's past explains why she hates herself.
Nacht spends most of his time in Black Clover criticizing others. At the end of Part 4, he shows that much of this anger is always directed at himself.
Nacht and his twin brother Morgen grew up as opposites. Morgen was well-liked and respected, eventually becoming a Magic Knight, while Nacht became a troublemaker. His friendship with Yami encouraged a rebellious lifestyle, and the two often fell into trouble.
Everything changes when Nacht discovers the truth about Faust's family. His family has been secretly studying demons for generations. Rather than being disturbed, Nacht is elated; he believes that he has found what makes him uniquely qualified to take on the name of Faust for the first time ever.
His natural talent allowed him to strike deals with four demons, and this success made him even more ambitious. Eventually he went too far; his attempt to summon the evil Lucifugus became the defining mistake of his life.
Morgen arrives and desperately tries to stop the ritual, but Nacht doesn't listen. The overwhelming power of the greatest demon makes it painfully clear that Nacht's family is being confused by something they don't fully understand.
Morgan uses light magic to save the night. Eventually, Morgen destroys the legacy that has preserved the tradition and saves his brother's life by risking his own. This tragic event completely reshapes the personality of the Night.
Nacht would have died to stop Lilith and Nahamah.
Nacht already knows that he cannot defeat Lilith and Nahamah by ordinary means. Although Night's attacks have no effect on them, the High Demon is isolated from Dante and trapped in Mana Zone: Dark Prison Hunting Ground.
Lilith and Nahamah do not engage in a serious fight, but Nacht is already wounded while eagerly dodging the fire-and-ice attacks. Their confusion over her persistence becomes one of the key expressions of the episode; from their perspective, Nacht should have just run away.
Nacht's answer basically says that he would rather die than allow monsters like them to harm good people, and his latest adventure best reflects this mindset.
Nacht combines the powers of Plumede and Wagner in a dual Devil Union, releasing Shadow Magic: Monument of Atonement. The curse creates a prison where he intends to lock himself up forever with Lilith and Nahamah. A visual depicts the demons descending into a pool containing skulls.
As if that wasn't enough, Lilith and Nahamah break out of the prison using Devil Fire Magic and Devil Ice Magic.
Their escape is heartbreaking because Nacht has already used up what should have been his trump card, and he knows it still hasn't bridged the gap between them. Watching them burn or freeze while enjoying their pain underscores to JUST just how terrifying those of highest rank really are.
Aster JUST arrived just in time.
In JUST , as Lilith and Nahamah prepare to end Nacht, Asta appears and instantly destroys the magic that has been tormenting her. Night tries to send her instead to the Dark Triad; she prioritizes her mission over her own survival, but Asta refuses to leave him behind.
This decision felt right after the incident revealed much about Nacht's willingness to sacrifice.
Asta is one of the few fighters who can threaten Lilith and Nahamah, and there's something hilarious about how she accidentally falls to her rivals who have perfectly crushed Nacht as they cannot feel the terrifying magical pressure surrounding them.
Asta evades them before she pulls out her demon-fighting sword and cuts directly into Nahamah. It's an incredibly quick victory, and just another reminder of how dangerous the Devil Union is to her.
But killing a demon creates an even bigger problem: Lilith freezes Nahamah's body before she can absorb it, allowing the twins to unite into one single being whose magic is significantly more powerful.
The twist instantly escalates the battle beyond anything Asta has ever experienced before: The Melting Demon fights outside of Castle and casts a magical curse that can destroy both Castle and Underground City.
This changes the nature of Asta's challenge. Anti-Magic can allow him to survive an attack on such a scale, but not everyone around him is able to do so.
The episode ends before the viewer can see if she wins, which is particularly brutal as Magna and Zora finally appear at the bottom. Their arrival suggests that the fight was no longer very simple.
Focusing on a single battle makes the plot better.
The biggest improvement in Episode 4 is that Black Clover finally stops trying to show everyone at once. Previous series had a difficult job establishing multiple battles throughout Spade Kingdom. It created exciting moments, but as the themes became more interesting it felt like viewers were constantly drawn from one encounter to another.
"Day of Atonement" avoids this problem almost entirely; Nacht remains at the center of the plot from beginning to end, and it doesn't feel like a distraction because viewers directly explain what the character is watching by risking his life.
Different versions of Night's Devil Union still feature unique designs, and Monument of Atonement gives his Shadow Magic one of its most visually memorable techniques. Lilith and Nahamah compete with fire-and-ice magic, especially when their powers begin to slip through Nacht's supposedly inescapable prison.
Asta's Devil Union is still going strong, and seeing how Anti-Magic has been able to effortlessly remove the attacks that tormented Nacht further affects his newfound power. The combination of Lilith and Nahamah makes the latter rival visually terrifying.
The episode works because it gives him time to sink into his greatest moments. Nacht's backstory transforms him from paranoid tactician to one of the story's most tragic characters, and Asta's arrival provides exactly the burst of hope he needed for the part: For the first time since the invasion began, Black Clover is focused on a man desperately trying to atone for his biggest mistake.
It also restates many of the episode's strengths: The greater focus on a single battle gives it an even better momentum; Nacht's backstory adds to its significant emotional depth and ultimately explains his guilt-ridden and self-destructive mindset; Asta's arrival is timely, causing the plot to explode with great energy, and the contrast between Nacht's hopelessness and Asta' s refusal to give up works well. The main disadvantage is that as Monument of Atonement is introduced and breaks down almost instantly, the technique doesn't take much time to break through.
