Each season of Hunter x Hunter is rated
This article ranks the Hunter x Hunter seasons, giving credit to Chimera Ant, Yorknew, Greed Island and later for storytelling, Nen and character development.
The Hunter x Hunter anime was completed starting in ၂၀၁၄ and its 148 episodes are still circulating today, spread over six seasons. The series adapted the middle of the manga into seasons, with each season highlighting an entirely new approach to storytelling and power-ups. Fans enjoyed more of the Chimera Ant arc because of its deep philosophy and strategic action, but others were not far behind in quality.
Chimera Ant season 5 peaked at 61 episodes
The 61 episodes of season 5 give Chimera Ant time to become the best of Hunter x Hunter. Gradually escalating adventures show a slow burn and allow Togashi to examine humanity's condition through chimera ants.
Meruem, king of the Chimera Ant, is introduced as the series' most powerful character. He can become an unstoppable destructive force, but it is not power that transforms him. Isaac Netero and Komugi use opposing approaches to communicate their humanity, and Meruen receives a message.
Gon's terrifying decline runs parallel to Meruem's transformation. The arc shows the adult Gon preparing himself as a way for justice and dignity to be sacrificed. Gon has no mercy on Neferpitou, threatening to harm an innocent wounded girl because she is unwilling to grant his wishes at once.
New York City season 3 shifts the story to Kurapika and the Phantom Troupe
Season 3 is known as both the Phantom Troupe arc and the Yorknew City arc, and marks a major shift in tone, content, and plot. Kurapika's quest for vengeance becomes entangled into an unfolding criminal conspiracy. Gon and Killua are prevented from winning the previous game by the same period of time that Gon and Killua encounter the phantom troupe.
Chrollo Lucilfer proves to be leading the most dangerous gang of thieves in the world. Except for a brief battle with the Zoldycks, he shows many qualities that solidify his distinct powers. While other members of the Phantom Troupe help shape the story like their boss, Kurapika is the star of season 3.
Beyond Gon, Killua, Chrollo Lucilfer and even Zeno Zoldyck, Kurapika is forced to choose between her revenge or the lives of her friends.
Season 4 of Greed Island balances creativity and emotion.
Greed Island is a fictional passageway between the evil atmosphere of seasons 3 and 5. It elevates Gon's quest for his father into a deadly yet fun adventure designed by marvelous video game rules. Created by an expert team of Hunters led by Ging, the game's unique mechanics allow exploration, strategy, and Nen attacks to be seamlessly integrated.
The arrival of Biscuit Krueger can be considered a pivotal point in season 4. Gon and Killua improve their skills, leading to the arc's unique battle in dodgeball tournament format. Razor acts as a menacing opponent and destroys both heroes and Hisoka before returning.
The dark side of Greed Island emerges through Genthru the Bomber, whose blasting Nen technique is utterly ominous for anyone. Season 4 finally offers meaningful character development, memorable battles and a clue that guides the gang to something even more sinister.
Season two of "Heaven's Arena" may go deeper.
Heavens Arena introduces Nen's vast realm, temporarily transforming Hunter x Hunter into an authentic fighting shonen built on increasingly sophisticated abilities. Gon and Killua enter the titular tower in order to earn money and improve their skills, but it turns out that physical prowess is only the first step towards something much larger than JUST .
As a result of Wing's lessons, Gon and Killua rise meteorically through the Heavens Arena, while Zushi's record-breaking status confirms an unbridgeable gulf between discipline and natural talent. Nen's superior mechanics are sidelined in favor of dangerous battles, and Hisoka's presence provides solid storyline for season 2.
What was promised in the Hunter Examination arc is confirmed in the Heavens Arena arc. After a lot of exhausting training and educational lessons, Gon Freecs clearly defeats Hisoka in Episode 35.
Hunter Exam Season 1 is a good introduction to anime.
There are only a few opening chapters that effectively establish the anime's identity, such as the Hunter Exam arc. Season 1 sees Ghosn leave Whale Island without his father and become a Hunter. Though initially seeming to be a straightforward coming-of-age adventure, Hunter x Hunter progressively enhances the sense of unpredictability that would later define Togashi's kaleidoscopic approach.
Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio enter the audition with different motives, but they are naturally drawn together as a team of classic anime. The trials continue to shatter hope, including an early test in which challenges were grouped according to tradition into shonen power tests; Killua controls Johness' heart.
In addition to their ever-happy heroes, Hisoka and Killua shine brightest throughout the Hunter Exam arc; both hide darkness that will become important in later storylines, and their relationship with Gon takes a completely different turn.
Election Arc Season 6 is a big step forward
Immediately following the turbulent emotional brilliance of the Chimera Ant episode, Election switched from "Hunter x Hunter" to political irony and personal reconciliation. Initially welcomed, this change was met with greater intensity than ever before as they struggled to share their ambition.
Continuing directly from previous events, the Hunter Association holds a presidential election to appoint Netero's successor. Pariston campaigns in an election where Vice President Pariston Hill manipulates the campaign process and Ging Freecs and other Zodiacs introduce rival programs. Unfortunately, the results of the elections are linked with the current Dark Continent Expedition, but the payoff is minimal.
Killua's desperation to save Gon carries significantly more emotional weight; the entry of Alluka and Nanika effectively reassembles Hunter x Hunter's power ceiling. Gong's long-awaited reunion with his father, Ging Freecs, is also satisfying, but their conversation goes nowhere specifically.
Cast and studio recording
The cast list includes Issei Futamata and Megumi Han, while the visual documentation of the series features Madhouse and Studio Madhouse. These production titles are still associated with the 148-episode run, and the artwork related to Hunter X Hunter scenes reinforces how much the anime's reputation depends on its finished workmanship and its source material.
What does the 148th episode mean for viewers?
The anime's ending in ၂၀၁၄ did not freeze its value. As the manga continues slowly, all 148 episodes over six seasons serve as a tight entry into a larger and unfinished storyline. A review reveals that the shows are related experiments on how shōnen can transition from adventure to politics, game rules to philosophy, and friendship to moral decay.
The biggest strength is that Hunter x Hunter never goes wrong, especially in the Election arc, and even more powerful is that despite its weak season it still feels like part of the same design, and Chimera Ant sets a record high for an anime series with 61 episodes.
