We ranked the 10 most influential episodes of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood".
In the rated episodes of Brotherhood, Roy, Alphonse, Izumi and Hohenheim pay equal price through responsibility, trauma and costly choices.
Hiromu Arakawa built Fullmetal Alchemist on the principle that every prayer has a value. Studio Bones and director Yasuhiro Irie used this rule in 64 episodes of Brotherhood, where Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric and Roy Mustang pay for their choices with body parts and loyalty. The most powerful roles force actors to choose between what they want and what they must be given.
Roy Mustang and Alphonse Elric put the task before their bodies.
In "Lost Light", Roy Mustang follows the lead of Riza Hawkeye and rejects the dentist's request to transform into a human being. This refusal proves that Mastergan trusts Hawkie over his own grief for Maes Hughes, over the pain that once drove him to take revenge as Pride and King Bradley force him through the portal, where he will have to pay with his opinion for a crime he never chose.
Alphonse Elric confronts the Gate with a body that is not easy to fight against his father. He chooses to stay in the armoury and promises to return later. The scene reminds Edward of the promise he made for Alphonso in "Reunion", which turns into Alphonzo's own responsibility for getting back.
Roy Mustang defeated Regeneration, but Jean Havoc paid the price.
Lust stabs Jean Havoc through the spine and injures Roy Mustang. This shows that the homunculi treat the best officers of the state's army as something they can discard.
Jean Havoc's back injury transformed the victory into a defeat, and "Advance of the Fool" announced his retirement as his legs no longer worked. Roy Mustang's win also provided testamentary proof that rejuvenation was over.
Izumi Curtis judges the Elrics, but gives us a teacher who never quits.
In "One is All, All is One", Izumi Curtis angrily meets Edward Elric because of his career as a state alchemist and welcomes the two brothers into his home. This combination of anger and care makes Izumi an exemplar of a teacher who never gives up on her student while being judged. Her month-long island experiment teaches that boys can survive without chemistry; artificial intelligence cannot be fooled, for every living thing has only one life cycle.
Izumi then reveals his own unsuccessful human transformation. This confession dispels the brothers' belief that they alone paid for the ban. Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric learn their teacher has a similar wound, so his acceptance acts as an amnesty to which no rule of Equivalent Exchange can afford. The scene also causes Izumi later to personally attack her father and fight like someone who had lost a pair for Gate.
Hohenheim allows Edward Elric to discover the truth about Trisha.
Unable to console Edward Elric directly from Hohenheim, in "Father Before the Grave" the prince asks Pinako if Trisha's hair and eyes match. The rotation shows a father still hiding behind clues and refusing to admit his shame.
Edward and Pinako dig up Trisha's dark hair in the place of her fragrant brown hair. The discovery reveals that what the brothers created was not their mother. This shifts Edward's impossible attempt to torture Trischa again, and his guilt from a brutal failure.
The Ishvalan War became the catalyst for the rise of Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye.
Riza Hawkeye tells Edward Elric about the war in "Ish: The Ishvalan War of Extermination". Her dialogue shows a soldier carrying every gun he fires. Kimblee ridicules Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkye as fools for hoping to be soldiers without murder, and this ruse reflects their guilt that they cannot escape.
Roy Mustang settles the score by deciding to become Fuhrer and appointing Hawkeye as his second in command. Riza Hawk-eye adds that his path will be completed in justice for everyone who fought in the war, which would take Mustang to a level higher than victory. The flame alchemy tattoo on Berthold Hawk-Eye's back relates the same talent that killed so many.
Shou Tucker uses Edward Elric's guilt as a weapon.
Shou Tucker combines Nina and Alexander as a talking chimera, calling Edward Elric "big brother". This word alone makes the horror of An Alchemist's Anguish even more personal because Edward has already spent days playing with the girl.
Tucker responds by comparing Edward's wrath to Elric's human transformation. The analogy expresses the same disrespect for human life, for two different reasons: Scar depicts Tucker being killed in front of Chimera and as a celebrity on the scene; Nina's fate sets the standard for examining every physicist who treats life objectively, from Kimblee to Father.
Alphonse Elric repays the first sacrifice of Edward Elric.
The explosion of the father destroys Edward Elric's automaton arm and hangs him in Fierce Counterattack. This leaves Edward vulnerable at his worst. Alphonse Elric convinces May Chang to help use her soul for Edward's right hand, showing that Alphons cares more about Edward than his own survival.
On the night that Edward gave his right hand to Alphonse's soul as a shield, the two brothers closed the circle at the same price.
Roy Mustang learns that his vengeance has stripped the Avenger bare.
Roy Mustang ignites Envy with flames once used in Ishval, thus "Beyond the Inferno" turns revenge for Maes Hughes into a test of who Mustang wants to be. Riza Hawkeye's flashback of burying an Ishvalan child explains why she fears punishment.
Edward Elric's question to Mustang whether that deceived face belonged to the future Fuhrer, one question infuriates him more fiercely than any order; then jealousy kills itself, which denies us the satisfaction of killing. Even when vengeance succeeds, it proves the avenger is neglected.
Maes Hughes died because Envy used family love as a weapon.
Maes Hughes can immediately see Envy's Maria Ross pretense, and as an investigator he proves that his emotions never let him down. Then after Hughes dumps a family photo, Envy takes the form of Gracia.
"Separate Destinations" shows that Maes Hughes's greatest strength is also his weakness. Jealousy kills Hughes out of love, causing him to receive the loss and feel cruel. Hugh dies in a phone box before he can warn Roy. The series turns into an unrecoverable message: the discovery of a military conspiracy.
Edward Elric gave up chemistry to bring home Alphonse Elric.
Edward Elric refuses to use the Philosopher's Stone in The Other Side of the Gateway, even when Ling gives him one and Hohenheim offers his life. This refusal proves that Edward is honoring his oath with Alphonse.
Truth accepts the ransom, and Alphonse returns to his body; Edward's arrogance exchanges the first human transformation that cost him a leg and an arm for sacrifice born of humility; the Fullmetal alchemist trades in the one gift that defined him for the only thing he had ever wanted.
