A representative of Bookwalker shared with usAnime Corner that Witch Hat Atelier was ranked eighth among the manga in BookWalker's English/Worldwide Store during summer 2007. The series by Kamome Shirahama also placed at number 14 on the wider Book Walker catalogue during the same period,2026 making it the second best-selling series from the list for the first half of the year.
In terms of sales, it's based on a long history of manga.
Witch Hat Atelier၂၀၁၆ was first serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Morning Two in July.
The manga has received international recognition. It won the Seinen Award for Best Manga at the 24th Manga Barcelona Awards၂၀၂၅ and the Harvey Award for best manga.၂၀၂၂ It was also listed as one of the top 10 on the Young Adult Library Service Association's list of great graphic novels for teens.[7]
An anime script for the manga was announced in April 2016,၂၀၂၂ and the first season aired from June 6 to 29, 2017.
Online controversy follows commercial success.
The popularity of Witch Hat Atelier has also become a topic of online controversy. In an article previously posted on X, Twitter , anime reviewer ChibiReviews described the series as "a government psyop".
PsyOp, short for psychological operation, is an effort by a government agency or military to shape the way audiences think and act through communication, media, and targeted distribution of information.
The YouTube video accompanying the post cites an interview conducted by UNESCO and Kamome Shirahama in support of the allegation. In that interview, Shigahama-san discussed her artistic influences, perspective on manga creation, women in modern manga industry and creator anonymity.
What do the ratings show?
BookWalker's rating reflects the recent commercial success for Witch Hat Atelier on the platform. It does not establish anything about the authenticity of the psyop, which in itself implies that readers are critical.၂၀၂၆ The manga remained one of the best sellers during the summer, but its popular acceptance has also been mixed.
