The 40-episode sci-fi mystery series from Star Trek has been officially licensed by Apple TV's Severance.

Sam Maggs said that Severance was the inspiration for Webtoon's 40th anniversary episode: A Star Trek Story.

Writer Sam Maggs told CBR's John Dodge that Severance had shaped the idea behind WEBTOON's Recollection: A Star Trek Story, a vertically scrolling Star Trek web cartoon set to premiere in July and run for 40 episodes. The project grew out of a simple creative question - what if science fiction mystery has a feel of Severance but is expanded into a 24-part television series with a cast from late ၁၉၉၀/early ၂၀၀၀?

The film is based on a true story.

Maggs describes herself as a lifelong Trekkie, and has said that her father became addicted to Star Trek: The Original Series when it first aired. She can't count how many times she watched First Contact while growing up, and jokes that Janeway rewrote brain chemistry at the age of 12.

That personal history went straight into Recollection: A Star Trek Story. Maggs said he wanted to create something that felt like "What if Severance, but a 24-episode sci-fi television series with an ensemble cast from the late '90s/early 2000s". Editor Sarah Gaydos was instrumental in putting the project together and stated that with the help of Gaydos and his team at Paramount/Star Trek, Recallation could be launched quickly.

Recollection: A Star Trek Story premiered on WEBTOON in July and became the second entry from the vertically scrolling platform's original Star Trek titles. The first was an episode of Stargazers: Star Trek written by writer Jarrett Melendez and Kisai Entertainment.

WEBTOON's official request for Recollection: A Star Trek Story synopsis gives readers a narrow, character-driven scenario. Early opens her eyes without knowing where she is or who she is. She wakes up on a spaceship with five other passengers suffering from memory loss, including the beautiful and impressionable Accel and Remy; they are described as mysterious but distant.

Readers' Feedback and Possible Future Seasons

The series proved to be a hit with readers on the WEBTOON app. At the time of writing, it has over ၄၀၀၀၀၀ viewers and more than ၅၀၀၀ dedicated followers. New episodes of Recollection: A Star Trek Story arrive every Sunday on the platform, and the series is scheduled to run for 40 episodes in total.

For readers, the result is a Star Trek story that introduces new characters rather than established symbols of the franchise. Maggs said not being able to use some of Star Trek's most famous characters doesn't feel like a limitation because Recollection's "locked room mystery" setting was truly liberating as it allowed Early, Accel and Remy to focus on a question centered around trust and identity.

Maggs hinted at the possibility of more seasons for Recollection: A Star Trek Story, which she says is now available through WEBTOON.
