Some anime series have a more detailed world structure than Sword Art Online.

Films like Fullmetal Alchemist and Made in Abyss build worlds that are deeper than Sword Art Online, connecting history, rules, conflicts and institutions.

Sword Art Online has helped pioneer a unique concept of fantasy: characters who are trapped within or connected to virtual worlds. Its regions - Aincrad, Alfheim and Underworld - administer proprietary settings and visual identities; the series' cast members include Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu. But building solid fictional worlds requires more than just interesting thoughts or situations.

Many anime have extended this foundation beyond Sword Art Online. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Made in Abyss, Mushoku Tensei, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Hunter x Hunter and One Piece offer a wide range of landscapes and cultures through years of conflict. Their animations have been credited to Studio Bones, Kinema Citrus, Studio Bind, Madhouse and Toei Animation.

The main test of the fictional world

Sword Art Online supports this concept through virtual environments with its own internal logic. The anime described here is further enhanced by the creation of historical archetypes, institutions and memories from history.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood builds Amestris into a political system.

As Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood progresses, Amestris becomes more apparent as a machine rather than a map. Almost all of the state's characteristics exist for reason. The laws of equal exchange are alchemy, but in the story power is also considered to be a source of science, livelihoods, weapons and politics.

Studio Bones's animations reinforce this framing: Edward and Alphonse prepare for battle; the truth stands at the door of darkness; and the Elric brothers disguise themselves to summon their mother back. These are not isolated visual moments that show how personal trauma, national power, and metaphysical laws intertwine together.

In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, war and civil unrest are not just background doctrines; they are part of a larger plot that involves the formation and development of Amestris. The world is also incredibly vast beyond Amestri's reach. Xing has its own political system, and the people from Ishval suffer the consequences of a war that radically transformed their society.

Creating deeply makes exploration dangerous and systematic.

"Made in Abyss" is made up of images created by Kinema Citrus, and it centers on a giant hole that divides each ecosystem and environment into different danger zones. Riko and Reg look deeper but show why this view matters: Going deeper means encountering things operating under completely different rules, and the Abyss has had a profound impact on the culture that developed around it.

Cave Raiders have their own rank and reputation system. They do the whole job by discovering where people frequently die. The Curse of the Abyss gives exploration a particularly harsh outcome: it is difficult to descend, but as one travels deeper, climbing back up becomes more dangerous.

The ancient relics point to cultures and events that have existed since before Riko's journey began, each new one answering some questions and creating many more. At the heart of the experience is exploration itself.

Mushoku Tensei uses travel to prove that the world is big.

Mushoku Tensei builds on many countries around the world with different cultures, political structures and languages. This scale becomes especially apparent when Rudeus begins to travel. Moving from one region to another can be difficult due to language changes and differences in social customs.

Because of past conflicts, there is distrust among some peoples; the geography determines which cultures interact and which are relatively isolated; magic has enough structure to feel truly integrated into society. There are different types of sword designs and levels in curses; dictatorships shape education, status and daily life rather than decoration.

The anime's slowness and willingness to explore ordinary life greatly contributes. Characters attend school, look for jobs, travel for months at a time, deal with political families, and interact with communities that exist independently of the Rudes. The result is one of Isekai's strongest romantic situations: the world does not revolve around the protagonist's comfort; it continues in his environment through friction, distance, and inherited tensions.

Frieren transforms time into reality

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End starts with the images of Madhouse, then most fantasy anime will use their story as a whole.

Frieren travels back decades later, and that means always finding places transformed by events he personally remembers. Statues are erected, old battlefields become commonplace scenes; his longevity makes these changes especially meaningful; the concept of time allows him to show how myths form and how societies interpret their own past.

Even demons have a clearly defined relationship with humans, which affects how the characters understand language, morality and coexistence. The world always feels ancient without any explanation of how old it is. Frieren proved that the construction of the world was still built in silence, contemplation and depth.

Hunter x Hunter expands without losing control of the structure

Hunter x Hunter is based on Madhouse's graphics, and changes gears completely. Bisky trains Gon and Killua to cover the training and advanced level analysis of the series, but the story moves further afield: Gon begins on a small island. The plot soon encompasses an entire uncharted region outside the world known for professional hunters, cities, clans, and mythical creatures.

The elements rarely feel out of proportion. The Hunter Association gives the story a structure that allows it to connect completely different storytelling genres. Nen adds an additional layer of cohesion. Although characters develop vastly different abilities, its rules remain harmonious.

The criminal economy of New York City is radically different from the game-like environment of Greed Island. Dark Continent reveals that the known world may represent only a fraction of what actually exists. A permanent sense of unexplored territory makes Hunter x Hunter's world feel almost limitless, as institutions, forces and conflicts are designed to support each other; the story size grows rather than collapses.

One factor makes geography a political force.

No anime has benefited from a lengthy world structure like One Piece. Toei Animation's visuals show Luffy wearing a cop helmet with pirates, Emet attacking Mary Geoise and The Great Kingdom showing how personal action, political violence and historical memory sit within the same map. Only geography essentially shapes the story.

The Log Poses determine the navigation, and the Red Line and Calm Belts affect how nations and pirates move around the globe. These physical rules directly influence politics: a world government is greatly influenced by pirates and allied kingdoms, while pirates, revolutionaries, emperors, and independent countries create additional authoritarian regimes.

Questions surrounding the true history of the world intertwine unrelated islands and conflicts in hundreds of episodes. Even briefly visited locations tend to have recognizable cultures. While logos can drive the narrative, without them there are events happening all the time on Earth. One Piece is therefore not an JUST pirate adventure.

The Bible says: "The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate".

Sword Art Online provided a widely recognized gateway to virtual-world storytelling, and Aincrad, Alfheim, and Underworld were unforgettable scenarios. The broader lesson is that worldbuilding is valuable when it comes into play: Amestris transforms chemistry into state power; The Abyss turns descent into career and adventure; Mushoku Tensei makes traveling into cultural friction; Frieren transforms memory into history; Hunter x Hunter changes expansion into structure; One Piece transforms geography into politics.

For viewers, this means that the world feels more adventurous as characters continue to form even after a character has left. The MyAnimeList comparison prompt prompts readers to choose an anime series with a high score, but the placeholder result shown is High Score: 0.
