Review Torikai Akane's dystopian manga omnibus and note its controlled reproduction, sex, survival, solid artwork and spares as well as the collector price.

Akane Torikai's speculative fiction manga Wandering Cat's Cage arrives in English through Takumigraphics, a brand of Fantagraphics and as a large hardback omnibus combining the two volumes of the original edition. The editorial catalogue costs RRP£ 30.99 and an eBook is available for around £18. Torikai may be familiar to some English-language readers from Pious Lie by Sensei, which was released on Vertical imprint by Kodansha in ၂၀၂၂, and this new release contains a foreword by Torikai, interviews between Torikai and Deb Aoki, and translations of Jocelyne Allen.

A silent door in a controlled society.

Wandering Cat's Cage begins by placing the reader in a futuristic world with precise biological and political rules. Few women menstruate, men have rare births and short lifespans, and the city is overseen by a government that tightly controls reproduction and the lives of those who can reproduce.

In the story, Sanada and Reiho are two men and a woman who live in an abandoned slum far from their comfortable city. Sanada works as an injection nurse to help those fleeing the city, while Reiho spends his days living in bed with wealthy women who sneak into town for nightly entertainment. His existence is closely watched because if the elite of the city knew about him, he would come under their control and become part of their breeding program; he'd be sealed off without any expectation.

Torikai doesn't force the reader to add content easily.

Torikai is not a new story about sexuality, gender transition and trauma. Sensei's Pious Lie explores these things with a force that can make reading difficult. Wandering Cat's Cage takes a different approach: it opens without much commentary on the state of the world; instead, readers unite society through small talk exchanges and the daily routine of Sanada and Reiho.

The manga does not hide the harshness of this reality; it still shows a world that is weak in controlling bodies and surviving. At the same time, the narrative begins by showing everyday life and asking readers to think about what they are seeing before defining the larger system.

The second half turns to the city.

The original Japanese edition was in two volumes, and the Takumigraphics editor combined them into an omnibus. In the second half of the story, the focus shifts: readers are gradually introduced to the city, its residents, and those who rule it.

This is a community run by women, formerly oppressed by men. It questions whether this transformation has really solved the problems of modern society.

The artwork conveys freedom when the movement slows down.

Some readers may find the beginning slow, especially if they don't get the underlying message right away. The artwork gives much of the appeal of the statement. Although Torikai's character designs are rough around the edges and not as beautiful as usual, they look like real people.

The physical edition is a large hardcover printed on high-quality paper. Extras add more value: Foreword by Torikai, interview with Deb Aoki and closing narration by Jocelyne Allen.

Collector's editions may be restricted to general readers.

Price is the main barrier. At RRP £၃၀.၉၉, the e-book costs around £18, and the publication feels more like a collector's work than for ordinary readers. Torikai has no Western touch yet to attract readers by creator name alone, which is unfortunate, as its content is in an audible place.

For readers already interested in the torikai, or speculative fiction about controlled reproduction and gender stereotypes, an omnibus is worthwhile. A free preview for readers outside this group may be helpful if they are able to tolerate pages in a wrong order.
