Ten forgotten mecha anime including Ideon, DAI-Guard, The Big O, Zegapain and King Gainer use robots to explore war, memory, office life and morality.

Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion have rightly dominated much of the talk about mecha anime. Their ambitious storylines and noteworthy designs earned them that status, however, highlighting 10 series which were ignored by one source and received equal attention due to their use of robots to examine warfare, politics, grief, memory, office life, and cosmic ethics.

Freed from the cosmos, Idion transforms infinite energy into a moral test.

Space Runaway Ideon finds three attackers who have been combined into a spaceship and a giant robot by alien colonies. The ship and the robot take possession of Ide, an infinite source of energy, as the militaristic Buff Clan chases them across space. Each week brings with it a more sinister commander and powerful weapon, but somehow Solo's crew survives.

The danger grows as the planet and other colonies also want Ideon for themselves. As deaths increase and trust declines, allies become rivals. Eventually, Ideon expresses his own desires and becomes disillusioned with the ongoing wars that humanity is fighting: Mobile Suit Gendarmerie Post-Space Runaway Ideon was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Interestingly, Sho's dark ending has been said to have inspired Neon Genesis Evangelion; even seemingly unnecessary plot lines fill in big questions about selfishness, altruism, and conflicts between individual and group interests.

DAI - Guard brings monster fights into the office culture

DAI -Guard begins with a failure. A giant robot is commissioned by the military to stop creatures called Heterodyne, but they do not return and are transferred from the Army to 21st Century Defense Security, who use it as a statue. Years later, during the company's annual security show, a heteroid appears and is attacked by an ill-equipped DAI - Guard.

The two pilots are salaried men, and the second is a female clerk in public relations who recycles machinery because they can't use guns.

Although the military and corporations claim to protect peace, the selfish actions of a few people endanger all. The mixing of demons with office politics is something new. DAI -Guard may seem like a children's show, but it speaks directly to working adults for a living, and its characters feel like friends and colleagues to viewers.

The Big O combines giant robots with a film noir puzzle.

The Big O story takes place in Paradigm City, which lost its memory more than 40 years ago. Roger Smith serves as the city's top negotiator and deals with issues with the help of Dorothy Wayneright and her boss Norman Burg. When a crisis is too big to talk about, Big O - a monster from the town's forgotten past - is called upon.

The series blends two worlds that rarely meet. Anime's giant machines and battles are reminiscent of ၁၉၅၀ and the 60s, especially Toho's monster movies. At the same time, the story borrows images from film noir and detective fiction, with each case acting as a mystery until the final clash takes place.

Zegapain rewrites the question behind each battle.

Kyo Sogoru lives an ordinary life based on school and swimming club. A girl he can barely see until he meets Shizuno Misaki, who agrees to appear in a promotional video for his club but as compensation asks him to fly the mecha for Cerebrum organization.

Everything in Zegapain becomes strangely familiar from that moment on. Kyo suspects the world may not be real, so she questions it as she fights to protect the people she loves. Each answer leads to a bigger question, and the story is enriched with every layer.

Superman King Gainer turns a frozen world into an exhilarating escape.

A global plague has reduced Earth to a frozen wasteland. The human race now lives in the cities of Gogol, but many people want to leave in search of warmer lands.

Exodus expert Gain Bijou helps the team steal a strange mecha called Overman, while game classic Gainer Sanga proves to be the rightful pilot and gives the machine its in-game calling.

The unique energy sets the series apart from Yoshiyuki Tomino's previous works. Although it moves quickly and has a more upbeat soundtrack, the backstory unfolds slowly over 26 episodes. Powerful animation and wonderful music by Kohei Tanaka further polish this mecha classic.

Argento Soma deals with the emotional wounds of aliens through grief and healing.

In the year ၂၀၅၉, aliens have been plaguing Earth for years, so Dr. Noguchi tries to revive a bio-mechanical alien named Frank. The experiment destroys the laboratory and leaves Takuto Kaneshiro with a scar. Revenge forces him to join the secret agency Funeral under the name Ryu Soma.

Argento Soma opts for slow pace and gentle rage. Adults in their twenties drive the machines, Hattie is an only child and does not get drafted into the military. The story follows a captain who has been traumatized and his relationship with him as they help each other heal; symbolism and subtle section titles complete the show's appeal.

Ghassaraki uses tactical armor to express political fear.

In the heart of Gasaraki, Yuushiro Gowa is an airman who uses a bipedal weapon called Tactical Armor. His influential family Gowa built the machine. When American forces attempt to capture the capital city of the fictional country Belgistan, they are beaten by rival armies and you take your time showing them their weapons.

The anime mixes futuristic and historical narratives with no, shinto and samurai pulling the strings behind evil zeibutsu. Episode 25 also explores how human lives are devalued during battles for "the greater good".

Special armored battalion Dorvack The real robot era Curio was maintained

In the year ၁၉၉၉, after tens of thousands of years in space, the Indians reached orbit. Their colony ship was nearly exhausted and they invaded Earth.

It's the Special Armored Battalion Dorvack who inflicts the real wounds. Major Takagi leads Masato Mugen, Pierre Bonaparte and Louie Oberon with variable mechas that can transform into humanoids.

Special Armored Battalion Dorvack began at a time when the true robot genre was gaining momentum through intense shows such as Armoured Trooper Votoms. Unfortunately, dorvack is no longer inspired by its competitors and has been sadly buried in history.

Blue sex is transforming the familiar science fiction.

Insect-like aliens named Blue invade Earth, forcing the surviving humans into a space station called Second Earth. Yuji Kaido awakes early from cryogenic sleep amidst the destruction when she is mentored by Marlene, a warrior who empowers her unique B cells to fight back against Blue.

The series opens with science fiction basics that fans of the genre might remember, but they quickly dismantle them as they are introduced; in Blue Gender, explosive action, body horror and tender romance go hand-in-hand.

The show was a rare find on Adult Swim in ၂၀၀၃. A violent and depressing storyline stood out as the network aired star anime such as Yu Yu Hakusho and Cowboy Bebop.

Panzer World Galient brings giant robots to a medieval fairy tale

In the world of Arst, Prince Jordy Volder flies to retrieve land from Marder, who has captured the legendary Panzer Galient. Panzer World Galient essentially adopts a fictional path as an adventurous young nobleman struggles to save his people and reclaim the throne. Giant weapons replace knights, with some even taking the form of centaurs instead of horsemen.

The series was supposed to flourish during the peak of mecha popularity, but it was overshadowed by the release of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam in ၁၉၈၅.

What do these 10 episodes mean for Makka viewers?

The realistic assumption for readers is that mecha anime can do more than make notable robot fights. The 10 titles above shift the focus to institutions, survivors, workers, negotiators, pilots and children who are forced into roles they don't fit; some adults turn robots into political tools while others use them to explore the personal costs of loneliness, duty and heroism.

Image names for the original material include Sunrise, Nippon Surprise, Xebec, Studio Sunrise and Ashi Productions.
