These anime endings allow villains, corporations or apocalyptic schemes to win by replacing hopeful heroism with dark and morally ambiguous endings.

In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Company Arasaka wins; in Hellsing Ultimate, Major dies satisfied with the success of his project; and in Berserk, Griffith becomes Femto. The result can be disappointing to fans, but the trajectory is darkened by natural uncertainty - a silly ending may seem more gratifying than comforting.

The global collapse came from a planned victory.

In End of Evangelion and in conjunction with Neon Genesis Evangelion, SEELE implements her final plan by launching a brutal military assault on NERV headquarters to capture Eva units. The Gainaks production featuring footage from Gainax and Tatsunoko Production shows the consequences: as Shinji Ikari and Asuka look out over an orange sea after the third effect, Senji suffers a breakdown while Gando Ikari sits tightly holding both hands.

SEELE installs the Mass Production Evangelions, transforming Unit-01 into a God Tree and successfully initiating the global Apocalyptic Third Impact. The giant Lilith-Rei demonstrates this by melting all of humanity's physical bodies in one primordial soup of LCL, uniting individual human souls into unique cosmic consciousness.

Caught in this supernatural, existential nightmare, Shinji Ikari is empowered to decide the fate of humanity's existence. Destroyed by trauma and loneliness, Seele gives up on her vision of emotional integration where pain and boundaries no longer exist. Though she ultimately renounces instrumentality altogether, the physical world and society are destroyed according to Seele's design, and their evolutionary outlook forever reshapes the universe as Seele succeeds.

Attack on Titan provided a different global hit. In season 4, MAPPA and Wit Studio visuals directed Rumbling, with Eren Yeager anxiously sitting in front of Armin and Mikasa asking his father "What are you doing?"

The giants march across continents, torturing ecosystems, flattening historic cities and wiping out 80 percent of all human life beyond Paradis Island. Eren commits a global genocide, ignoring the desperate pleas of his closest friends to stop unprecedented mass killings. He is eventually allowed by Mikasa to execute him, but this result turns out to be part of his plan to transform the remaining policemen into saviors of the world.

Devilman Crybaby ends with a similar recalibration of the human race. Ryo Asuka's true identity awakens as Satan, leading to a global war that plunges society completely into paranoia, violence and self-destruction. While Akira Fudo desperately tries to defend mankind as Devilman, Ryo's demonic hordes systematically destroy civilization until only a handful remain.

Ryo brutally murders Akira's beloved Miki, sending the hero into one final apocalyptic confrontation on a ruined Earth. The Science SARU image shows Akira and Lucifer standing side by side looking at the stars. In the story, Sartan relentlessly kills Akira, leaving his body lying naked on the rock.

Corporations and political systems swallow rebels

Studio TRIGGER's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the clearest example of a system that defeats an individual. David Martinez's tragic journey through the streets of Night City culminates in Arasaka's final weapon, Adam Smasher, and his deadly attack.

Despite being equipped with a deadly Cyber-Skeleton, David suffers from severe cyberpsychosis and physical exhaustion while trying to protect the remaining crew. Almost all of the cast are killed during a hopeless robbery, leaving only Lucy who escapes into solitude on the moon.

As the cold, oppressive machinery of Night City continues to operate without a hitch, devouring young mercenaries and squeezing human lives for profit, Arasaka triumphs in the end, proving that individual heroism is utterly meaningless in this crumbling dystopia.

Sunrise's Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans turns military defeat into political victory. The hopeless struggle for freedom and economic independence from Tekkadan ends in total destruction under the overwhelmingly powerful army of Gjallarhorn.

Rustal Elion uses illegal planetary bombing weapons and media manipulation to systematically destroy Mars' child soldiers, executing each of the Tekkadan leaders. Orga Itsuka is assassinated on the street while Mikazuki Augus dies defending his comrades during a brutal final battle.

After the revolution's total destruction, Rustal Elion emerged as a benevolent leader of the newly reformed democratic government, fomenting conflict to consolidate political power and rewriting history to portray himself as a peacemaker.

Villains destroy heroes and steal the future.

Madhouse's Hellsing Ultimate depicts Major's triumph through obsession, as he unleashes a war of chaos and bloodshed across London in an attempt to bring down the immortal vampire Alucard once and for all.

After decades of detailed planning, this deranged warrior enables Alucard to absorb millions of souls, including the paradoxical singularity that causes an ancient vampire to disappear from physical reality. Major embraces his own death with a joyful smile, knowing that his insane grand plan had succeeded even as he dies.

He died with complete satisfaction, proving that the common man can overcome and temporarily destroy this invincible monster by the sheer force of his obsessive desire.

David Production's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood recreates the survival of the villain as it really is. Jonathan Joestar has spent his entire youth battling with his foster brother, Dio Brando, trying to end a horrific vampire operation.

In the final confrontation on a burning luxury cruise ship, headless Dio kills Jonathan with a neck wound. Holding his enemy's head, Jonathan dies believing that his last embracing kiss will drag them both to eternal ocean depths and end their heated feud.

Dio succeeded in killing Jonathan and stealing his physical body, surviving a catastrophic shipwreck in an underwater box.

Studio 4°C's Berserk features a betrayal that becomes the foundation of a new order: Griffith sacrifices his loyal mercenary companions in a terrifying apocalyptic ritual called Eclipse to perfect his own vision.

Griffith emerges from the horrifying sacrifice and is reincarnated as Finto, the fifth member of The Hand of God.

Griffith rose from the ashes of his betrayal and eventually founded the pure dream kingdom of Falconia.

Wit Studio's Vinland Saga turns revenge into a trap: Askeladd has controlled Thorfinn's life for decades, and used the boy's intense hatred to turn him into a ruthless murderer.

Thorfinn spent his entire youth executing assassinations for Askeladd, and lived up to the promise of winning an honourable confrontation to avenge his father's murder.

In his final political gamble in the Vinland Saga, Askeladd kills the Danish king to protect his native Wales and deliberately incites Prince Canute to kill him.

The deaths became tactical victories.

Ufotable's Demon Slayer makes the hero's death a strategic victory for the villain. During a tragic Mugen train journey, Kyojuro Rengoku bravely fights to protect some of the passengers from the fearsome Upper Rank Three demon Akaza.

Despite displaying the ultimate physical prowess with his legendary fire-breathing technique, Hashira is defeated by Akaza's unnatural strength and endless stamina. Akaza fatally wounds him in the chest, causing Rengoku to die prematurely.

Rengoku manages to delay the demon until sunrise, but Akaza escapes into the surrounding jungle after damaging his arms. The evil Demon Slayer makes Tanjiro weep bitterly beside the dying master's corpse, giving Muzan a major advantage.

A MyAnmeList scoring survey has also been released, asking readers to choose the highest-rated anime series on MyAnneList and sign up for a place in the top list, showing results with High Score: 0.

As important as these endings are to readers, they raise a more difficult question than the hero's triumph: Can the world, corporations, political systems or even the villain's personal obsession absorb the benefits of victory? Disillusionment is part of the problem, but moral uncertainty can also make dark reflections seem more complete than comfortable.
